Professional Achievements
The Department of Sociology & Anthropology was singled out as the outstanding department for assisting students in their pursuit of competitive awards by Ohio University's Office of Nationally Competitive Awards (ONCA).
Elliot Abrams serves as President of the Ohio Archaeological Council.
Gene Ammarell serves as Director of Ohio University's Southeast Asian Studies Program.
Cynthia Anderson was voted Vice President of the Sociologists for Women in Society.
Michelle Brown has been honored with a 2008 Arts and Sciences Dean's Outstanding Teaching Award.
Ursula Castellano received an Ohio University Research Committee Grant to study the role of clinicians in mental health courts.
Haley Duschinski received the Distinguished Service Award from Ohio University's Office of Nationally Competitive Awards (ONCA). Her research in Kashmir was profiled during International Week 2008.
Debra Henderson has been named Presidential Teacher, 2008-11: Ohio University's highest teaching distinction.
Bruce Hoffman has been honored with a 2008 Arts and Sciences Dean's Outstanding Teaching Award.
Jieli Li was elected President of the Association of Chinese Professors of Social Sciences in the United States (ACPSS), and serves as Director of Ohio University's International
Development Studies Program.
Edward Morris has left the department to join the Department of Sociology at the University of Kentucky--but not before receiving the 2008 Scholarly Achievement Award from the North Central Sociological Association. Congratulations, Ed! You'll be missed!
Lena Wright Myers retired from the department in June but continues an active research agenda. In recent years, she has been honored with the Marguerite Rogers Howie Distinguished Service Award from the Association of Social and Behavioral Scientists and the James Blackwell Founder’s
Award from the Association of Black Sociologists.
Marty Schwartz was elected Fellow of the Academy of Criminal Justice Sciences, and Distinguished Scholar of the
Year by the Division on Women and Crime of the American Society of Criminology, and elected Chair of the section on critical criminology of the ACJS.
Robert Shelly was elected President of the North Central Sociological Association.
Nancy Taterek has been named a 2008-09 University Professor and received an Ohio University Research Committee Grant to further her study of prison anthropometry. We are also very happy to congratulate her on her recent promotion and tenure!
Ann Tickamyer received a research grant from the National Science Foundation to conduct a national survey of informal work, and received the Distinguished Rural Sociologist award from the Rural Sociological Society.
Tom Vander Ven was honored with the Outstanding University College Advocate award from Ohio University's University College.
Ted Welser received a research grant from Microsoft Research to support his online networking research.

Edward (Ned) Becker (M.A. Sociology 1973) was
selected as one of three College of Arts and Sciences Distinguished Alumni
for 2005 and honored at the awards dinner and ceremony.
Robert Bozick (B.A. 1999), now at Johns Hopkins
University, has an article in the September 2005 issue of Social Forces.
Thomas Stucky (1991 HTC, Sociology) now at Indiana-Purdue
University at Indianapolis has the lead article in the June 2005 issue
of Justice Quarterly.
