WHAT IS SOCIOLOGY?

Sociology is the scientific study of society. It uses systematic methods to describe and explain human behavior. In the search for this knowledge, sociologists focus on the actions, beliefs, values, norms, organizations, institutions, and other social forces that characterize a society and that shape people’s lives. To study all of these factors, sociologists use a variety of scientific methods such as surveys, interviews, and observation. Moreover, sociologists conduct objective analyses of historical materials, literature, and the arts.

By carefully collecting and analyzing this information, sociologists produce explanations of how our social world works and how it influences our personal lives. This has turned sociology into a useful tool for solving social as well as personal problems. In fact, sociological research often helps lawmakers, administrators, business and labor officials, and other citizens to understand and solve problems that confront them on a local, national, and international level.

Sociology at Ohio University

Ohio University first offered a BA in Sociology in 1920. The Masters of Arts degree in Sociology came soon after, in 1932, while a BA degree in Anthropology was added in 1967. Beginning in 1980, a second Sociology undergraduate BA option was offered, focused on Sociology-Criminology. The department has long enjoyed a strong committment to excellence in both research and teaching, and faculty have received numerous awards in both areas over the years.
