Sociology Degree Requirements


Degree Requirements

The sociology major requires training in the core areas of the discipline and a flexible range of topics for specialization. The following list of requirements can be downloaded as an Acrobat pdf.

A. Required Courses:

SOC 101 - Introduction to Sociology
PSY 221 - Statistics (or MATH 251, COMS 301, QBA 201)
SOC 351 - Elementary Research Techniques
SOC 403 - Development of Sociological Thought
or SOC 404 - Modern Sociological Theory

B. Electives:

Students must complete courses in each of the four areas listed below for a total of 32 hours as part of 44 hours in the major.  Of the 44 hours in Sociology, 16 hours must be taken at the 400 level.  Sociology 403 or 404 is included in the 16 hours.  No more than a maximum of 60 hours may be taken in Sociology.

1. Social Inequality – at least 1 of the following:

SOC 230 - Sociology of Poverty
SOC 329 - Race and Ethnic Relations
SOC 331 - Class and Social Inequality
SOC 429 - Soc of Race, Ethnicity and Class
SOC 435 - Soc of Welfare and State
SOC 470 - Gender and Social Inequality

2. Societal Institutions – at least 1 of the following:

SOC 201 - Social Problems
SOC 210 - Social Psychology
SOC 211 - Collective Behavior
SOC 230 - Soc Of Poverty
SOC 327 - Sociology of Education
SOC 329 - Race and Ethnic Relations in the U.S.
SOC 331 - Class and Social Inequality
SOC 424 - Urban Sociology
SOC 450 - Data Analysis

3. Social Psychology – at least 1 of the following:

SOC 210 - Social Psychology
SOC 211 - Collective Behavior
SOC 315 - Social Identities
SOC 412 - Public Opinion
SOC 416 - Society and the Individual
SOC 419 - Group Processes

4. Integrative Topics – at least 1 of the following:

SOC 216 - Deviant Behavior
SOC 365 - Sociology of Mental Illness
SOC 414 - Social Movements
SOC 421 - Comparative Studies in the Family
SOC 422 - The American Family System
SOC 467 - Violence to Women
SOC 471 - Gender and Justice

College of Arts and Sciences
requirements for an BA degree in Sociology

  1. Two years of a foreign language or equivalent   (0-24 hours)
  2. Natural Sciences (8 hours must be in one department) (18 hours)
  3. Humanities (8 hours must be in one department) (18 hours)
  4. Social Sciences (8 hours must be in one department) (18 hours)

    Note: Sociology courses CANNOT be used for the Social Science requirement if majoring in Sociology. Anthropology courses can be used to satisfy the Social Science requirement.

  5. 90 hours of all the courses taken by the student must be at the 200 level or above in courses approved to satisfy the Arts and Sciences requirements.

University General Education Requirements

  1. English Composition:  See catalog of entry.  The junior-level requirement can be fulfilled by taking Anth 356J/Soc 356J, “Writing in Anthropology and Sociology”
  2. Quantitative Skills Requirement – Tier I:  See catalog of entry.
  3. Breadth of Knowledge Requirement – Tier II:  Total of, at least, 30 hours (at least 4 hours from four of five different areas.)  See University Bulletin for details.
  4. Synthesis of Knowledge Requirement – Tier III:  See catalog of entry.
