Dean Targets

While serving as dean (and earlier as the interim dean), I selected a few
"targets" to focus on. The guiding principle- help build and strengthen the
college. I might add that this task will be hard to accomplish because the
College of Arts and Sciences is a collection of energetic and creative faculty, staff, and students who already produce extraordinary results! In addition, I should acknowledge that many of the efforts suggested by these targets will be guided
primarily by the able leadership of the Associate and Assistant Deans.

The targets:

  1. Increase the number of tenured/tenure track faculty with continuing
focus on increasing diversity within the ranks of faculty.

  2. Improve retention of first year students.

  3. Increase the focus on development including greater involvement of
chairs and directors in alumni relations and fund raising.

  4. Work with Communications and Marketing to develop an improved
    communication's strategy.

  5. Help to emphasize the value of a liberal art's education through
participation in the AACU LEAP campaign and the development of the
Scholars' program in Arts and Sciences.

  6. Keep current CAS capital improvement projects and other space
issues in the fore front of university wide conversations.

  7. Help to increase technological advances available for all forms of our
    work (teaching, research, and service).

  8. Help build a culture where excellence, in all its forms, is
    encouraged, acknowledged and rewarded.

  9. Advocate for and represent the college to the university wide
community in a way that highlights the excellence of our work.
