Graduate Programs - Frequently Asked Questions

What should I do to pursue a dual master's degree?  What procedure should I follow?

To pursue a second or dual master's degree, you will need to complete an application for the second degree. There is a fee associated with the application. In addition to the application, you will need to complete a Dual or Second Masters Degree form. Both the application and form can be obtained from Graduate Student Services, McKee House.

What is the maximum time period allowed for me to finish my master's degree or PhD?

The maximum time period for a master's student is six years and seven years for the doctoral program. More information on time limit can be found in the Graduate Catalog.

What should I do if I want to apply for graduation?

Graduation applications can be filled out online through the Office of the Registrar.

Where could I find detailed lists and descriptions of GAships and TAships available?

Funding opportunities a located primarily through the departments. You should contact your graduate chair.

Can I submit my thesis/dissertation electronically?

Ohio University will now permit students to submit dissertations electronically. Electronic submission is handled through the Associate Provost for Graduate Studies. For more information, please contact the following website:

When do I get my diploma?

With the exception of doctoral students at the June commencement who receive their diploma during the ceremony, graduate students receive their diploma approximately 2 months after the graduation date. For students who need verification that they have completed all requirements, a letter of completion is sent out approximately 2 weeks after the graduation date.

What is a letter of completion?

This letter states that the student has completed all requirements for the degree. In most cases, this can be used instead of the diploma. Letters of completion are sent out approximately two weeks after the graduation date. Letters of completion can be requested earlier. Once it is verified that all requirements are met, our office can produce a letter for the student.
