ATHENS, Ohio - Ohio University sophomore Nancy Judd of Strongsville, Ohio, earned the
Barry M. Goldwater Scholarship and sophomore Dan Wik of Springboro, Ohio, received a
Goldwater Honorable Mention.
A biology and biochemistry major, Judd was one of 300 undergraduate students nationwide
to receive a prestigious Goldwater Scholarship. The scholarship, named for former Sen.
Barry Goldwater, recognizes college sophomores and juniors who wish to pursue careers in
mathematics, engineering or natural sciences. The scholarship covers eligible expenses for
tuition, fees, books and room and board up to a maximum of $7,500 annually for two years.
"Nancy Judd is an outstanding student who is already well on her way to a career in
scientific research," said Joe Shields, associate professor of physics and astronomy.
"A Goldwater Scholarship is fitting for her recognition and accomplishments."
Wik, a physics and astronomy major, was recognized with a Goldwater Honorable Mention
for his research experience and academic work.
"I work with Dan as I would work with a graduate student, and that's been true since
he was a freshman," said Tom Statler, associate professor of physics and astronomy. "He has
a good combination of perseverance and intuition; these qualities are going to make him
a fine scientist." |
