Introduction

Ohio University offers a range of internships in the National Assembly of Wales, Great Britain.  The Assembly is located in Cardiff, two hours west of London.  The program is open to American students across the United States*.

The Assembly is part of the devolution drive of British Prime Minister Tony Blair, who won a landslide election in 1997 on the back of promises of referenda for government in the regional nations of the United Kingdom: Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland.

Interns may work with political parties, assembly members (AMs) or with a committee.  Applicants have a large degree of say in their own placement.

Dates
This internship operates as a semester term, that is 15 weeks, twice a year:

Winter: January-April
Fall: September-December

The Assembly is family-friendly, which means it works around British school terms.  Unlike the British Parliament in London, where workers continue into the early hours, the Assembly generally enjoys regular office hours.  Interns should find themselves with plenty of time to explore the city and indeed other regions of Great Britain and Europe.

bulletProgram Requirements

This program is open to junior and senior undergraduate students only.  Eligible participants must have prior course work in British or European politics and/or history; a minimum 3.0 GPA; and program applications must be accompanied by two letters of recommendation from faculty.  Participants must be U.S. citizens.
bulletCredit

Students will receive a 'credit'  or a grade if written work is submitted for the Political Culture course (4 quarter hours, the equivalent of 3 semester hours); they will receive a "credit" for satisfactory completion of  the internship (for 12 quarter hours, the equivalent of 9 semester hours).  Evaluation of the internship experience will be based on the assessment by the internship supervisor at the Assembly, participation in the orientation, and a brief presentation to Swansea University faculty at the end of the term.
