Cardiff has a population of
around a quarter of a million. It is the capital and biggest city
of Wales. Within Britain it is a regional center for education,
business, sport, music and entertainment. Cardiff is the site of one of the campuses of the University of
Wales and has over 15,000 students. |

|
| Cardiff
has all the qualities of a large, cosmopolitan city. It is home for
several theaters, cinemas and shopping malls, as well
as a very large range of restaurants and nightlife
outlets. The city center is 15 minutes' walk from
Cardiff Bay. Inexpensive and frequent public
transport links the center with outlying areas and other cities in
Britain. |

| Rock
Cardiff is rich in music venues, the most notable of
which are Cardiff International Arena, Clwb Ifor Bach and the University
of Wales, Cardiff. In recent years Wales and Cardiff in particular have
been at the forefront of the British rock scene, with bands such as Manic
Street Preachers, Super Furry Animals, Catatonia and Stereophonics leading
the charts. Welsh rock has never been so strong or
influential.
Britain is the most vibrant country in the world for pop
and rock music, and Cardiff is undoubtedly one of its most important
musical cities. REM, Radiohead and Moby are some of the major names
to play in Cardiff in recent times.
In Spring 2000 Super Furry Animals made history
by recording an album entirely in Welsh. Later in the year,
the BBC's Radio 1
music station, the most listened to in the whole country, chose Cardiff as
the venue for its hugely popular Live 2000 week. |
