Dear Colleague:

Re: Internships in the National Assembly for Wales

The Department of Political Science at Ohio University and the Swansea University, are pleased to offer an unusual opportunity for student internships at the new National Assembly for Wales in Cardiff.  The Assembly has authorized us to act as coordinators for American students interested in doing internships with the Assembly.

We hope you will announce this new program to your students.

As you may know, the opening of the Assembly in 1999 capped a remarkable two-year period of devolution and constitutional change in Britain.  Our program provides the vehicle through which American students will be able to participate in the precedent-setting innovations in regional government that are taking place in Wales.

We are committed to making the internship a creditable academic endeavor as well as a valuable personal experience.  Students will begin the term with an orientation course on British Political Culture, an Ohio University course taught by faculty from Swansea University.  During the internship, there will be twice-monthly seminars conducted by SU faculty on current issues before the Assembly.  At the conclusion of the internship, students will submit a short paper and make a summary presentation of their work to a faculty committee from SU.  Students will receive a grade for their work in the course and seminar, and "credit" for satisfactory completion of the internship.  The credits will be in quarter hours, 7 credits for the courses; 9-12 for the internship.  These credits should easily transfer to your institution.  We will be selecting our groups in the Spring for internships in beginning in September; a second group will be selected in the Fall for the internships beginning in January .

If you have any questions about the program, do not hesitate to contact me via phone (740-593-1334) or e-mail, molineu@ohio.edu, or visit our website at www.cas.ohiou.edu/pols/WalesInternship.

Sincerely,
