Placement Options

Interns have a large degree of say in their internship placement. Students are encouraged to research the responsibilities of the Assembly and the stances of the parties in order to help identify their most suitable placements. Below are links that should familiarize students with Welsh political parties and politics.

The Assembly's official website includes photos and details of Cabinet members as well as committee interests. The site includes the latest legislative happenings, a subject index, plenary updates, and a guide to understanding the Assembly.

The Labour Party is the current governing party in both Wales and in the whole of the United Kingdom. Labour previously attempted to create an Assembly in the 1970s, but at that time failed to win the support it needed in a referendum.

The Conservative Party's official title is the Conservative and Unionist Party, and it traditionally opposes actions that might weaken the union between England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland. Nonetheless, it is an active participant in Assembly affairs.

Plaid Cymru is the nationalist party of Wales. It has long advocated Welsh self-government and seeks to strengthen the powers of the Assembly. The party stands to promote economic prosperity, social justice, and environmental health through decentralist socialism.

The Liberal Democrats supported the creation of the Assembly.  It is a relatively new party, but draws on links to the powerful Liberal Party of the nineteenth century, which supported Home Rule in Ireland, in a similar political dilemma between centralized versus devolved power.
