Certificate Programs
Certificate programs are similar in hours of concentration to a minor. They are:
Environmental Studies
Interdisciplinary course in the areas of biological sciences, earth sciences, chemistry, environmental policy, economics and environmental geography.
Gerontology
Co-sponsored by the Colleges of Arts and Sciences and Health and Human Services, this program provides the opportunity to gain knowledge and skills for a career in working with the elderly.
Geographic Information Science (GIS)
Geographic Information Science (GIS) is an important synthesis of traditional mapping with more advanced tools of data modeling and analysis to provide new and enhanced information on geographic topics. The power of GIS is the use of spatial analysis techniques to analyze geographic information. The Undergraduate Certificate in GIS requires that students complete a rigorous interdisciplinary set of courses; in addition to "core" GIS and cartography courses, students are required to complete coursework
in statistics, computer applications, programming, database management, as well as a capstone internship project utilizing their GIS skills. The Certificate is open to all students with the exception of Geography majors.
Global Learning Community
The Global Learning Community (GLC) is an innovative, two-year program that prepares students for leadership opportunities in a rapidly changing world. Open to all majors, the GLC brings together the resources of the colleges of Communication, Arts and Sciences, and Business in an inter-disciplinary, 30 quarter-hour program on global issues, with a strong emphasis on real-world projects and problem-solving skills.
GLC courses are not traditional classes with lectures, tests, and papers. Instead, students work in project teams on global problems and issues. Students enter the GLC in fall quarter of their sophomore or second year, and spend that year in residence in Bromley Hall, a private residence hall near campus. The junior year is non-residential. Each GLC student completes at least two international and cross-cultural projects.
International Studies
Certificates in African, Asian, East Asian, European, Latin American, or Southeast Asian Studies; ideal for adding an international dimension to a degree or preparation for a career or graduate program in international affairs.
Islamic Studies
The Certificate in Islamic Studies will enable undergraduate students to gain knowledge of the Islamic religion and the diverse cultures and societies it has influenced.
Italian Studies
The aim of the Certificate in Italian Studies is to provide an introduction to the very rich and varied culture of Italy, and to explore it using a variety of disciplines and subjects. These subjects include literature, history, archeology, art, cinema and political thought.
Jewish Studies
This certificate is an opportunity for students to expand their knowledge of Jewish civilization, culture, and history during their undergraduate program at Ohio University.
Political Communication
Jointly sponsored by the Colleges of Arts and Science and of Communication for students who want to gain knowledge and understanding about political communication.
Women’s and Gender Studies
In addition to taking introductory and advanced coursework in women's studies, students may select special courses from a variety of disciplines within the university.
