Information for Transfer Students

Transfer Credit

All college-level credit earned with a grade of "C-" or higher at a regionally accredited institution is accepted when you transfer to Ohio University (OU) and can be used to satisfy degree requirements in the same manner as credit completed at OU. Credit is awarded after admission to the University as a degree-seeking student and upon receipt of official transcripts. Remedial courses are not transferable. Remedial courses are not considered college-level work and include (but are not limited to) preparatory classes such as arithmetic, developmental mathematics, developmental English, and writing skills.

Shortly after you have been accepted as a transfer student, the Office of Admissions will send you a tentative credit evaluation report. However, the transcript evaluator in the College of Arts and Sciences will complete a final review of your transfer credits. Questions about your transfer credits should be directed to Dr. John Dreyer in the Office of Student Affairs.

All grades accepted for transfer credit at OU are converted on your academic record to a "T" grade symbol. Acceptable hours of credit are calculated and recorded on your academic record as quarter hours. The grades you earned at another institution are not entered on your OU transcript. As a result, if you are a transfer student, you enter OU with no GPA on your academic record.

Transient Students - Ohio University students taking summer or occasional courses away from OU

Students may request to take courses at other colleges or universities during the summer break and under other circumstances. The College will review your request and, if approved, you can receive credit toward your OU degree. If you are interested in this option, please do the following:

  1. Apply to the college or university you wish to attend as a transient or visiting student, obtain a schedule of courses and, if possible, a course description of the courses you would like to take. The college or university you attend must be a regionally accredited institution. If you have questions regarding an institution's accreditation, please contact our Office of Admissions.
  2. Complete the Petition for Transient Student Course Work Approval Form
  3. We will review your petition and notify you if your courses were approved for potential transfer credit. You should complete the enrollment process at the transient school for these approved courses.
  4. The following conditions are necessary for Ohio University to accept the transient credit you complete at another institution:
    1. You must earn a grade of "C-" or better.
    2. You must take the course for a grade. Pass/Fail or CR (credit/nograde) courses will not be accepted.
    3. You must not have taken the course previously at Ohio University, regardless of grade you earned here. Your transfer course cannot be counted as a "retake" for any previously taken Ohio University course.
    4. On completion of your courses, you must provide Ohio University with an official transcript of your work. You are responsible for arranging to have the official transcript sent to the Office of Admissions at Ohio University.
    5. Please be aware that the grades that you earn at another institution do not transfer. The courses will be given the notation of "T" on your DARS instead of a letter grade. Your grade point average at OU will not be impacted by your transfer credit work.
