* DARS TIP OF THE WEEK * READ CAREFULLY, READ CRITICALLY *
"The DARS is your roadmap to graduation," as advisors often like to say. But, it's true! Accordingly, it requires close attention as you read through and attempt to better understand and interpret the DARS. The three pages that comprise the DARS are simply too important for skimming or scanning. The results of such a careless reading range from minor inconvenience to MASSIVE inconvenience, e.g., delayed graduation.
When meeting with students, advisors frequently notice errors of varying importance that are working against a student's path to graduation. The problem affects freshmen through seniors and is usually the result of a less than critical read-through on the student's part. Sometimes students attribute the mistake to faculty advisor error. But, remember, it is YOUR responsibility to know your requirements and to learn how to read and understand your own "roadmap" to graduation. Mistakes, both large and small, can be avoided if you simply take the time to READ your DARS, carefully and critically.

The Society for Applied Anthropology's Student Endowed Award offers undergraduate and graduate students in the fields of anthropology, applied social sciences and other disciplines the opportunity to become members of the society as well as travel accommodations for the next SfAA meeting.
The deadline for application is Jan. 14, 2010, and the form can be downloaded here. For more information, please visit <http://www.sfaa.net/committees/students/studentendowment.html> ---------------------------------------------------------------------------
NEW * CRITICAL LANGUAGE SCHOLARSHIP * APPLICATION DEADLINE: SATURDAY, DECEMBER 19, 2009
The US Department of State is pleased to announce the upcoming scholarship competition for the 2010 Critical Language Scholarship (CLS) Program for overseas intensive summer language institutes in thirteen critical need foreign languages. The on-line application for CLS Program awards will be available November 9, 2009, and the deadline to apply will be December 19, 2009.
Critical Language Scholarships (CLS) provide group-based intensive language instruction and structured cultural enrichment experiences for seven to ten weeks. Students may apply for one language, and will be placed at institute sites based on language evaluations after selection. The 2010 CLS Program will include new programs in Indonesian and Japanese. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------
* WINTER INTERCESSION REGISTRATION *
Don't overlook the opportunity to slip in an extra class or two by taking courses offered during the intercession, NOVEMBER 30-DECEMBER 31.
If it's not feasible to stay in Athens to attend classes, check out all the web-based courses listed at the regional campuses-- you can do one of these at home. Or, if you are within driving distance of any of the OU campuses, you can attend a class there. Remember, courses from regional campuses provide Ohio University credits and count in your DARS the same way as Athens campus course credits do.
A word of warning about Winter Intercession: First, be VERY careful to note the time frame allowed for canceling or dropping a class. In general it is much shorter than regular quarters and it's easy to lose track of how quickly the cancel/drop dates come and go. Even more importantly, these deadlines are "flexible" and may be tailored to a particular course format--e.g., a workshop or field experience. Therefore, to avoid having to pay for a class you weren't able to attend or complete, you must cancel or drop within the specific allotted time frame described in the details for THAT particular intercession course.
Second, the majority of intercession offerings happen not to be Arts & Sciences courses. This may not be important to you, but if you're attempting to complete A&S requirements, rather than University requirements, be cautious. Check your DARS and ask in the Student Affairs office, Wilson Hall, if you aren't sure. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------

LIVING GREEN/HEALTHY LIVING: <http://www.ohio.edu/sustainability> ____________________________
* TIP OF THE WEEK * WALK AROUND TOWN *
Save money on gas and give a boost to your health by walking when you only have to go a short distance. It may not sound revolutionary, but it's easy to forget to use our own two feet in our hectic, car-focused culture.
Walking greatly decreases your carbon footprint (duh), and helps clear the air of smog-forming pollutants. It also is good exercise — something many of us are in dire need of, considering that a new CDC report concluded that more than 25% of Americans are obese.
The good news is more and more cities and towns are starting to wake up to the many values of walking and are finally starting to design things to be more pedestrian friendly (in Europe they've known this for generations). Areas with high foot traffic often are the most vibrant, interesting parts of town, and high gas and land prices are encouraging people to give another look at more densely settled parts of town (good news for the burgeoning New Urbanism movement).
Next time you need some eggs or ice cream, or want to catch a movie, ask yourself if you can walk or bike there instead of starting up that car. Athens is blessed with a paved bike path (walkers can use it, too!) that takes you along the Hocking River directly to Kroger, Walmart, and the malls on E. State Street. If you don't want to walk back, the ACT bus (Athens City Transit) runs by all of those places on the hour and can return you and your packages to campus on M-Sat until 6pm. The planet, and your health, will thank you for using your own two feet.

To further encourage hoofing it, the site Walk Score has just released a list of America's 10 most walkable cities. You might be surprised who made the grade. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------
